Today I learned...

...that syphillis was originally a disease spread amongst sheep. Until farmers started getting lonely.

Huh. As far as I know, the bacteria can't actually be hosted by other organisms... meaning other animals. It seems to be pretty specific -- I think they've been able to get it to survive once or twice in a rabbit, but that's all.

But who knows how a disease that's existed for at least the last 600 years started? Yours is a good story at least.
